In this presentation I look at the relationship between language and nature in the Modern South Arabian communities, with a focus on communities that speak Mehri and Shehret. Proto-Berber was an Afroasiatic language, and as such, its descendant Berber languages are cousins to the Egyptian language, Cushitic languages, Semitic languages, Chadic languages, and the Omotic languages. Proto-Semitic is a hypothetical reconstructed language ancestral to the historical Semitic languages. These languages deserve better terminology, since the “Modern South Arabian” languages are not descended from “Old South Arabian”, plus Old South Arabian is not completely extinct in the modern era and Modern South Arabian languages presumably had ancestors that existed in the old days. He is currently the Malvin and Lea Bank Professor of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Jewish Studies, and Linguistics at Penn State University, where he has taught since 2004.
